README for the IBM RS/6000 Operating Environment for I-DEAS Master Series The following software products (CDROM) are required: - AIX Version 4.3.3 and Bonus Pack - I-DEAS Master Series Release 9 The following hardware is required: I-DEAS Master Series - supported RS/6000 with a 3D graphics adapter. Optional: To do a manual installation using installation files (bundles), follow the instructions through STEP 2.3, and then see the Technical Notes in /IDEAS/DOC/ideastn.html. SpaceWare software(Ver. 9.2.17) and the Magellan driver(Ver. 4.14) have been included in this package for your convenience. They may be found in /IDEAS/SpaceWare and /IDEAS/Magellan directories after installation of the Operating Environment for I-DEAS Master Series. Follow the manufacturer's procedures for installation and use. See step 5 for instructions for Netscape and Adobe Accrobat. ################################################################## STEP 1. Download the Install Tool (aix_c3p9.tar.gz) file. 1. From the WEB download page, click on 'Install Tool' to download the file to your local system. (This may not be the system where you will be installing I-DEAS Master Series.) 2. You will be presented with a "SAVE AS" panel. You must have at least 60MB of free disk space in the directory where you select to save the tar file. Note: To determine where you have sufficient disk space type "df -k" and look in the 'Free' column for a filesystem that has at least 60MB. Your 'SAVE AS' should be to a directory in that filesystem. If you do not have a filesystem with sufficient space, go to SECTION D and follow the instructions for increasing filesystem size. ########################################################################## STEP 2. SETTING UP THE INSTALLATION FILESYSTEM Note: If AIX 4.3.3 is not installed on your I-DEAS Master Series system (The target system), see 'SECTION A' for directions on installing AIX 4.3.3 or 'SECTION E' for updating an AIX 4.3.2 installation. 1. Login to your target system as 'root'. 2. If the tar file from STEP 1 is not on this system, do a binary FTP to get the tar file into a directory with at least 60MB of free space. Note: The install.ksh command in the next step will create the /IDEAS filesystem. You must have at least 400MB of free space to complete this installation. 3. From a terminal window, enter the following commands to extract the program files: cd / gzip -d aix_c3p9.tar.gz tar -xvf aix_c3p9.tar ./install.ksh ./install.ksh cd /IDEAS tar -xvf //aix_c3p9.tar.tar ########################################################################## STEP 3. DOWNLOADING ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE 1. From the WEB download page, click on the link to the Fortran runtime tar file ("XL FORTRAN for AIX, V7.1") to download to the /IDEAS/usr/sys/inst.images directory. Untar the Fortran runtime (tar -xvf fort71rte.tar) and remove the tar file. 2. From the WEB download page, click on the link to the AIX 4.3.3 ML 9 updates. *Unzip the file (gzip -d AIX4.3.3ML9.tar.gz). Untar the Maintenance Level file (tar -xvf AIX4.3.3ML9.tar) and remove the tar file. 3. From the WEB download page, click on the link to the xlC 5.0 updates. *Unzip the file (gzip -d xlc.tar.gz). Untar the Maintenance Level file (tar -xvf xlc.tar) and remove the tar file. 4. Put these updates and fixes in the /IDEAS/usr/sys/inst.images directory. 5. Rebuild the Table of Contents in the /IDEAS/usr/sys/inst.images directory. inutoc /IDEAS/usr/sys/inst.images * gzip can be obtained from the following web site: http://aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu/aixpdslib.html ########################################################################## STEP 4. INSTALLING RS/60000 OPERATING ENVIRONMENT FOR I-DEAS MASTER SERIES 1. Enter the following commands to begin the installation of the Operating Environment. cd / /IDEAS/init_diskette/upgrade_pre_installed 2. Follow the prompts in the script to complete the installation of the prerequisite products for the Operating Environment. ########################################################################## STEP 5. Optional Software 1. Netscape Communicator 4.7.6i From the PLM website, download Netscape Communicator 4.7.6i. Select the proper language file. The language file must be installed in order for Netscape to work properly. If Netscape is being installed on AIX 4.3.3, an upgraded version of libc.a must also be downloaded from this site. 2. Adobe (R) Acrobat (R) Reader v. 4.0 To install Acrobat, run /IDEAS/adobe/INSTALL script. ################################################################## PROBLEMS OR CONCERNS During the installation process, installation messages (including error information) will be contained in the /IDEAS/adm directory. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the installation of one of the products you have already installed or attempted to install, refer to the logs in this directory. ################################################################## SECTION A. INSTALLING AIX VERSION 4.3.3 BASE OPERATING SYSTEM In this step, you will install the AIX 4.3.3 base operating system. This process will overwrite the information presently stored on the hard disk(s) you select. Be sure you have backed up any files you wish to keep before you begin the AIX installation procedure. Go to the system on which you will install I-DEAS Master Series. If you have an RS/6000 43P Model 140, 150, 240, 260, 44P Model 170, 270, F40 or F50, go to step 1 below. If you have any other RS/6000 machine, go to SECTION B. 1. For RS/6000 43P Models 140, 150, 240, 260, 44P Models 170, 270, F40 and F50: a. Press the 'Power' switch on the system unit to turn on the machine. b. When the keyboard icon appears on the screen, press F1 IMMEDIATELY to put the system into maintenance mode by invoking AIX System Management Services (SMS). c. When the SMS screen appears, click the 'Multiboot' icon to select it. d. On the next screen, click on the 'Boot Sequence' icon to select it. A list of devices from which the system can boot will be displayed. e. Type the number '1' over the dash (-) next to the description of the CDROM drive. f. Insert AIX 4.3.3 CDROM Volume 1 in the CDROM drive. g. Click the 'Save' icon on the screen. The new boot sequence will be displayed in a new window, with CDROM at the top. h. Click the 'Exit' icon associated with the boot sequence window (or use the tab key to scroll to the exit icon and press Enter. The boot list will be redisplayed with CDROM at the top and marked with a '1' to indicate that it is first in the boot path. Click 'Exit' again to clear this dialog. i. Click on 'Exit' to clear the Multiboot window. The System Management Services main window reappears. Click 'Exit' to begin the installation process. 2. To install AIX, you will be prompted by two windows. When the first window appears, press either F1 or F2 as prompted by the screen and press Enter to confirm your display. 3. In the second window, type '1' to select the English language and press Enter. IMPORTANT! The RS/6000 Operating Environment for I-DEAS Master Series creates a file system of 450MB for I-DEAS Master Series. You will need to ensure that you have sufficient additional disk space for any optional products you intend to install. 4. To select target disk(s) for installation, follow these procedures: a. On the screen entitled "Welcome to Base Operating System Installation and Maintenance", the system will prompt you to choose from a list of options. Type '2' and press Enter to select "Change/Show Installation Settings and Install". b. On the next screen, "Installation and Settings", type '1' and press Enter, to select "System Settings". c. On the next screen, "Change Method of Installation" type '1' and press Enter to select "New and Complete Overwrite". d. Follow the instructions on the next screen, "Change Disk(s) Where You Want to Install", to select the amount of hard disk you require. e. Type '0' and press Enter to confirm your selected disk(s). Type '0' and press Enter again to verify your choice. f. After you have confirmed these settings, AIX Version 4.3.3 Base Operating System installation will begin. It may take up to 45 minutes to complete this step. 5. When AIX Base Operating System installation is complete, follow the prompts to reboot the machine if it does not reboot automatically. During the reboot sequence, a variety of informational AIX messages will scroll in a small window in the upper right corner of your monitor. You will be presented with a window called 'Configuration Assistant TaskGuide'. 6. See 'SECTION C' for help in configuring your system. 7. Continue to STEP 2 to install the Operating Environment for I-DEAS Master Series. ################################################################## SECTION B: ALTERNATIVE AIX INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS For RS/6000 43P models 100, 120, 133, and 166. 1. Login as 'root', type "shutdown -F" and press Enter to shutdown the machine. 2. After the message 'Halt completed..." is displayed, the machine turns itself off. 3. Insert the AIX 4.3.3 System Management Services (SMS) diskette into the diskette drive. (This diskette was supplied with your machine.) 4. Press the 'Power' switch on the system unit to turn on the machine. 5. When the first icon appears on the screen, press F1 IMMEDIATELY. The AIX System Management Services has started. 6. Click the 'Start' icon to select it. 7. Click the 'Select' icon. If there is no 'Select' icon, click 'Default', and then click 'Select' when it appears. 8. Click the 'CDROM' icon. The number '1' should appear above it, indicating that the machine will boot from the CDROM. 9. Click 'OK'. 10. Insert AIX 4.3.3 CDROM Volume in the CDROM drive. You may use either the Client or the Server CDROM. 11. Remove the System Management Services diskette from the diskette drive. 12. Select 'Exit' to end AIX System Management Services. The system will reboot from the CDROM and AIX 4.3.3 installation will begin. 13. When AIX Base Operating System installation is complete, follow the prompts to reboot the machine if it does not reboot automatically. During the reboot sequence, a variety of informational AIX messages will scroll in a small window in the upper right corner of your monitor. You will be presented with a window called 'Configuration Assistant TaskGuide'. 14. See 'SECTION C' for help in configuring your system. 15. Continue to STEP 2 to install the Operating Environment for I-DEAS Master Series. For any RS/6000 model with a key (turn key to enter service mode). 1. Insert AIX 4.3.3 CDROM Volume 1 in the CDROM drive. You may use either the Client or the Server CDROM. 2. Turn the key to the service position, which may be indicated with a wrench icon or the word 'Service'. 3. Press the 'Power' button on the system unit to power the machine off. Press the 'Power' button again to power the machine on. The system boots from the AIX Version 4.3.3 CDROM and the AIX installation begins. 4. When AIX Base Operating System installation is complete, follow the prompts to reboot the machine if it does not reboot automatically. During the reboot sequence, a variety of informational AIX messages will scroll in a small window in the upper right corner of your monitor. You will be presented with a window called 'Configuration Assistant TaskGuide'. 5. See 'SECTION C' for help in configuring your system. 6. Continue to STEP 2 to install the Operating Environment for I-DEAS Master Series. ################################################################## SECTION C. CONFIGURING AIX USING THE AIX CONFIGURATION TASK GUIDE ASSISTANT 1. After the system reboots, the "Configuration Assistant Task Guide" appears. Click on 'Next'. 2. You may perform any or none of the tasks shown in the list at this time. However, performing the following three tasks, at a minimum, is strongly recommended. - Set or verify the system date and time - Set the password for the system administrator ('root' user) - Manually configure network communications (TCP/IP). 3. When you finish the tasks you chose from the Configuration Assistant Task Guide, select 'Exit the Configuration Assistant' and click on 'next'. 4. Select 'Finish now and do not start the Configuration Assistant when restarting AIX'. 5. Click on 'Finish'. The boot process will complete and take you to the login screen. ################################################################## SECTION D: INCREASING FILE SYSTEM SIZE If you find that you need to increase the size of your file system to accommodate installation of the Operating Environment, follow this procedure. 1. Type 'df' to determine if any file systems are full. 2. Type 'smit'. 3. Select 'System Storage Management'. 4. Select 'File Systems'. 5. Select 'Add/Change/Show/Delete File Systems'. 6. Select 'Journaled File Systems'. 7. Select 'Change/Show Characteristics of a Journaled File System'. 8. Select the file system name you want to increase. 9. Increase SIZE of file system (in 512 byte blocks). 10. Exit SMIT. ################################################################### SECTION E: UPDATING EXISTING AIX 4.3.2 OR C3P 7.1 INSTALLATIONS You can use the AIX 4.3.3 CDs to update your AIX Operating System and avoid having to perform a complete installation. As always, make a complete backup of your system before beginning. 1. Put the AIX 4.3.3 CDROM Volume 1 of 4 in your CD drive. 2. Issue the command "smitty update_all". 3. Press F4 and select your CD device. 4. Press Enter twice to activate and follow the prompts to change CDROMs. 5. After the updates complete, reboot your system and then continue with STEP 2 above
